Departing from Port Elizabeth we travel north through old Settler Towns like Uitenhage, Wolwefontein and Jansenville, where we stop for tea and learn all about the Military Fort on the hill, to arrive in Graaff-Reinet with the overlooking and imposing 1400m high Spandaukop Mountain, for lunch, (own account). The town is also known as the
“Gem of the Karoo” as it has more national monuments than any other town in South Africa. After booking in to your room you can do a guided walk (or drive) to Reinet House Museum. In the late afternoon we visit the “Valley of Desolation” where you look from a safe viewpoint over the awe inspiring, gigantic Karoo Basin with the encircling Mountain Range in the far distance where about 250 million year ago Dinosaurs roamed and from where you may watch a magnificent sunset and enjoy a sundowner.

You start the day with a leisurely breakfast and then spend the morning visiting the rest of the places of interest and historical sights in this town. Visit the Cacti Nursery and Die Groot Kerk with lunch at the maintained historical Military Club. Lunch for own account. In the afternoon we visit the Camdeboo Nature Reserve and on the return to the accommodation can spend the rest of the day at your own leisure. Dinner in town (own account)

Today we drive to Nieu Bethesda, an unusual arty village home to many various types of folk, to visit the curious “Owl House’ and learn all about the tragic life of Helen Martins. Take part in a Fossil Tour where you can observe the 300 million year old fossils still embedded in the sandstone. Stop for light lunch (own account) then travel over the mountain to a local Merino Sheep Farm. Dinner at the farm.

After breakfast on the farm, we spend our time viewing rich fossils and San Paintings as well as hearing the stories of the soldiers during the Anglo Boer War of 1899-1902. View the only private Fossil Museum in South Africa and end off after lunch with a most informative and interesting Medicinal Plant Walk with a Khoisan guide with knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation. This day we say goodbye to this lovely Karoo Farm and continue to the Mountain Zebra National Park in Cradock. Lunch at the park restaurant (own account). Here you will be able to see some of the 250 Zebras and other animals that live in the park. After dinner you can watch the magnificent South African night sky with its many shootings stars as only visible on a clear Karoo night. Dinner at park restaurant for own account.

This morning, we travel through Cradock stopping to view and learn the history of the beautiful Tuishuise, after which we visit the Olive Schriener House Museum before heading back to Port Elizabeth. Refreshment stop at Golden Valley Hotel (own account). We arrive in Port Elizabeth approx. 17h00
